Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in open, standards-based unified communications and collaboration (UC&C), announced today it is delivering Polycom® RealPresence® video collaboration solutions to enable a live face-to-face dialog at The Tech Awards Gala 2013. During the event, 2012 laureate winner and co-founder and CEO of TeachAIDS, Dr. Piya Sorcar, will participate from Hyderabad, India, and speak with Shuman Ghosemajumder, co-founder and chairman of TeachAIDS, who will join from the Gala stage in Santa Clara, Calif. The annual event, a signature event of The Tech Museum of Innovation, takes place on November 14, and recognizes entrepreneurs around the world who use technology to benefit humanity. Polycom has been actively involved with The Tech Awards program since its inception in 2001, and 2013 marks the sixth consecutive year Polycom has served as the exclusive global communications sponsor of the program.

Dr. Sorcar will be joined by Indian movie star and TeachAIDS ambassador Anushka Shetty, with both participating from Polycom’s Hyderabad Executive Experience Center to provide an update on the TeachAIDS program to the audience members in Santa Clara. TeachAIDS provides HIV education with unprecedented efficacy to more than 200 organizations and governments in 73 countries, educating millions around the world, including breakthrough implementations in regions which had banned sex education.

Polycom Executive Vice President and CMO Jim Kruger will also address the Gala audience during the evening. “We are honored to once again support The Tech Awards, and to defy distance barriers by bringing Dr. Piya Sorcar and Anushka Shetty to the event through the power of video collaboration,” said Kruger. “Dr. Sorcar, Shuman Ghosemajumder, and the many visionaries and humanitarians being honored at The Tech Awards demonstrate how applying innovation in the right ways can have measurable impacts in solving some of the world’s greatest challenges.”

“We appreciate Polycom’s continued support to The Tech Awards, as well as its commitment to innovations that help transform how people work, teach, and collaborate,” said Tim Ritchie, President of The Tech Museum of Innovation. “Once again, Polycom’s technology will enable us to bring our world together in real time and share with Gala attendees the impactful and inspirational work of our laureates.”

The Polycom technology used in the live gala video conference includes the Polycom® HDX® 8000 video systems, as well as the Polycom® RealPresence® Platform, the most comprehensive and interoperable software infrastructure for universal video collaboration.

About The Tech Awards

The Tech Awards, a signature program of The Tech Museum of Innovation, honors 10 international innovators who are applying technology to confront humanity’s most urgent challenges. The Tech Awards honors individuals, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies who are using technology to significantly improve human conditions in 5 awards categories (Environment, Education, Young Innovator, Health, and Economic Development). The technology used can be either a new invention or an innovative use of an existing technology. An individual is also honored as a James C. Morgan Global Humanitarian, which recognizes those whose broad vision and leadership help to alleviate humanity’s greatest challenges.

The Tech Awards program was launched in November 2000, and The Tech Awards Gala was held in 2001 for the first time. Since the inception of The Tech Awards program, 267 laureates have been recognized. Their pioneering work has included building a “solar suitcase” to provide emergency lighting and power for medical procedures, developing an eco-techniques toolkit that improves the living conditions in rural communities and the creation of a heat-sensitive label for vaccine vials to make sure people receive potent immunizations.
