OneLegacy Chief Executive Officer Tom Mone will be speaking at two major conferences in China later this summer, discussing best practices in organ and tissue donation and calling for greater worldwide awareness of this pressing need. OneLegacy is the world’s largest organ, eye and tissue recovery organization.

My trip to China is all about spreading this message and learning from each other on how we can all do a better job in positively impacting donation activity in our own communities.”
August 3-5, Mone will join with distinguished international faculty in addressing the annual meeting of the China Transplant Physician Society taking place in Kunming. There, Mone will describe the model and best practices for organ donation in the United States, will share his road-tested experience as it relates to the ongoing challenges of organ donation, and will provide suggestions on how to make the donor management process more effective at the local level.
Shortly after the conclusion of that meeting, Mone will speak at the Donation and Transplantation Institute’s education program, also being held in Kunming. The institute is a nonprofit foundation that brings together experts in the field from Spain, Europe and America to advise and support the implementation of projects in organ, tissue and cell donation and transplant and to foster a wide network for research in the field.
“Modern medicine has made organ and tissue transplantation possible, yet tragically too many people who are good candidates to receive lifesaving hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys and other organs continue to die each day because there are simply not enough donors to meet the growing need,” said Mone. “We need to do all we can to not only raise awareness of this issue but to remove the barriers and outdated thinking that is holding back even greater success with the transplantation process.”
Under Mone’s leadership since 2000, OneLegacy has seen a 74 percent increase in lives saved by organ transplantation and a 300 percent increase in lives healed through tissue transplant. Last year OneLegacy established a new national record of organs recovered and transplanted as well as setting a national record of tissue and cornea donors.
