The College of Medicine of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, set up 4 small laboratory animal rooms to meet the demand of scientific application, expecting to provide 500 researchers and 60 projects annually with high-quality facilities and efficient services.

“The Medical College is the key sector of a comprehensive university,” NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung said at the inauguration ceremony of the center, Feb. 21, adding that with the new facilities, NCKU College of Medicine (NCKUCM) will be ready to involve in interdisciplinary research, achieving fruitful results and elevating the university’s world ranking.

With the purpose of enhancing the accuracy of experiment to provide more accurate diagnosis and more efficient treatment for the patients, NCKUCM set up the 4 small animal labs to expand the existing scale of Laboratory Animal Center (LAC).

The new labs are in compliance with the international standards and regulations for animal lab so that the animal experiments for research and study plans that relate to biomedical sciences can be properly implemented, according to LAC.

“A world-class lab animal center is completed as the 4 additional small lab animal rooms are set up,” said Chi-Ho Lin, Dean of NCKUCM, adding that NCKU Laboratory Animal Center situated at the 12th floor of our Medical Center is an area of around 2200 square meters, in addition to an area of around 330 square meters as the small animal room located at B1 of the same building.

Animal experiment has been one of the key methodologies in the field of biomedical science research, according to Wen-Tsan Chang, Director of LAC, and there are approximately 500 researchers and 600 projects applied annually in Taiwan.

The construction of new labs is expecting to relieve the overload of application for scientific experiments, he added.
