Spinal Decompression procedure is performed through a surgical incision in the back. The goal of the surgery is to improve problems affecting legs such as numbness caused by pressure on the nerves of spine.

Several Types of Spinal decompression

1. Laminectomy – removal of entire bony lamina.

2. Laminotomy – removal of a small portion of the lamina and ligaments.

3. Foraminotomy – removal of bone around the neural foramen.

4. Laminaplasty – expansion of the spine.

Indications of Spinal decompression

  • Difficulty walking and standing.
  • Leg pain is significantly worse than back pain.
  • Conservative treatment fails.

Pre-operative Care

  • Don’t take over the counter pain cream relievers 2 weeks before the surgery. This includes common medicine products like Aspirin and Ibuprofen.
  • Don’t smoke at least 2 weeks before the surgery.
  • Don’t take vitamin E and anti-coagulants 2 weeks before the surgery.
  • Make sure to tell your doctors about any medication you are taking and any problems you’ve had with previous operations.
  • Don’t eat and drink anything for 8 hours before the surgery.

Steps during the Procedure:

  • The surgery will be done under general anesthesia.
  • Skin Incision.
  • Perform laminectomy/laminotomy.
  • Decompress the spinal cord.
  • Decompress the spinal nerve.
  • Spinal fusion (if needed).
  • Suturing.

Post-operative care

  • Your vital signs will be monitored.
  • After surgery your doctor will prescribe pain medications.
  • Do not drive for 2-4 weeks after surgery or as prescribed by the doctor
  • Lifting of heavy objects and exercises should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
  • Slight movement and exercises are recommended.
