Dr. Takashi Gojobori, a world-renowned expert on molecular evolution and comparative genomics, received an honorary doctoral degree from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on November 12.

The honorary degree was conferred on Dr. Gojobori in recognition of his contributions to evolutionary genomics, molecular evolution, educational achievements as well as his excellent personality.

Upon receiving the honorary doctorate degree from NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Dr. Gojobori expressed his appreciation and praised the university’s efforts at advocating genomics research.

“It’s a great pleasure to accept such a wonderful honorary degree from NCKU particularly under the presence of my colleagues from KAUST,” said Dr. Gojobori who is currently a distinguished professor of bioscience in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

He also said, “With our KAUST delegation, we’d like to start collaborating with NCKU in doing research and student and faculty visiting.”

Dr. James A. Calvin, KAUST’s vice president for academic affairs, led a nine-member delegation to NCKU participating in the conferring ceremony for Dr. Gojobori.

“Dr. Gojobori is a tremendous colleague in KAUST and not only he is a brilliant scientist to which we are all well aware but he’s a truly gentleman and colleague who represents the essence of what it means to be a professor and a scholar,” Dr. Calvin said.

He added, “we are thrilled that Dr. Gojobori receive this recognition as one of the many tokens as this quality both as individual and as a scientist.”

Before joining KAUST, Dr. Takashi Gojobori was a professor at the Center of Information Biology and DNA Data Bank of Japan.

He was also Vice-Director of the National Institute of Genetics in Japan.

During his tenure at the National Institute of Genetics, he held a number of highly prestigious international visiting, advisory, honorary and editorial appointments.

Dr. Gojobori’s research interests range from comparative genomics and gene expression of neural cells in sensory organs of various organisms to marine metagenomics of a diversity of microorganisms.

He aims at elucidating the evolutionary origin of the neural network and its application to synthetic biology for developments of bio-energy.
