VANCOUVER, British Columbia

Japanese food is a favorite among Vancouverites, so why do so many of us only enjoy it at restaurants instead of making it at home? Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) chose Vancouver as the only Canadian city on their global tour of Shoku-Iku (food education) events focusing on Japanese food culture and encouraging people to have a go at making it themselves through a hands-on sushi-making class.

MAFF cooperated to take place “Anyone Can Make Sushi,” a free one-day event on November 8 at Nikkei Centre to showcase how healthy and delicious Japanese cuisine is, and demystified the notion that making Japanese food at home is difficult. Chef Takayuki Omi, Raw Bar Chef from Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel led participants through a 90-minute session, first introducing the basics of Japanese cuisine before a hands-on sushi-making cooking class which includes tips on how to pick and prepare the ingredients.

All participants said “Great, it’s easy to make Sushi !“ or “I became to able to make Japanese food!”. “Vancouverites are really familiar with Japanese food, but it‘s still seen as something that you go to a restaurant for instead of making at home,” says B.C.-based MAFF ambassador, Yukari Peerless. “But it’s actually really easy and healthy to make Japanese food yourself. The ingredients you need can be found at most local supermarkets these days, and you use a lot of technique that most home cooks already know.” Other host cities for the workshops are Barcelona, Seattle, Copenhagen, and Kuala Lumpur.

This project is implemented as a consignment business of Food Industry Bureau food culture and market development Division, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries .
