National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has recently launched its campus food ingredients registration platform to safeguard food sanitation and safety.
Started in March, the content of school meals includes detailed information about ingredients, and seasonings are recorded in the platform, according to the university.
This platform allows students and parents to check online the content, sources and nutritional information of everything served in school meals.
To increases public confidence in the safety of school food, the Ministry of Education (MOE) initiated the establishment of a national pilot ingredient registration platform last year, and NCKU is one of the partner schools offering a model.
According to NCKU’s Housing Service Division, the Kung Fu Canteen provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner from every Monday to Saturday. The menu includes western breakfast, cafeteria, noodles, set meal, hot pot, Korean cuisine, and Japanese cuisine.
Menu items and seasoning are shown respectively. The detailed nutritional information and food ingredient suppliers are updated by the personnel of the canteen every day.
Take the grilled pork noodle as an example. From the website, we can know that the grilled pork, ground pork, and vegetables are purchased from BingZai market. Mei-Shi-Jia food ingredients distributor is the supplier of dried seaweed; Fu-Yu egg shop is the supplier of eggs.
Seasonings for the meal are listed on the website in the section of seasoning, including spicy sauce, ketchup, barbeque sauce, oil, sugar, salt and many others.
All the data cannot be revised after midnight in case the information is needed in the future.
Information on the website is updated by the companies. Staff of Housing Service Division and the Health Center will examine the data irregularly.
According to the university, Parents are very worried about the food safety. Many parents called to ask the food safety control in the campus due to the food safety problems that happened in Taiwan last year.
In addition, to ensure the food safety and sanitation of campus dining, NCKU have professional inspection agency do a random inspection on meals which incline to have high coliform bacteria.
