Monthly period is a measure of Woman’s health. It is vital to understand that a woman’s menstruation requires coordination between pituitary and gonadal front. It is counted from the first day of menstrual bleeding. Pituitary gland released FSH and stimulates the ovarian follicles to release mature egg. As they mature, ovarian follicles secretes increasing amount of estrogen. However, any condition that alters the production of hormones, FSH, estrogen and progesterone will suppress ovulation. Insufficient ovarian hormones and endometrial abnormalities would result to monthly cycle disorders. It may be the cause of infertility in the future. Normal menstrual flow can be monitored by the following guidelines.

First is the frequency of menstruation. Normally, 80% of women having normal menstrual flow will have the menstrual cycle every 21-35 days or less than this. If ovulation is not achieved resulting to chronic problem of menstruation, it can be the cause of infertility. Many eggs are produced but only retain within the ovary is the known of Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome. Small eggs are usually found in the ultrasound and menstrual flow is usually longer and heavier than normal. Moreover, the uterus may thickened for many years and have more risks of having endometrial cancer. Other case may be associated with diabetes as well.

Second is the amount and duration of menstrual flow. Normally, it will last for 2-7 days. The amount of blood flow is measured by the number of pads used around 3-4 pads per day. The blood clot should not exceed the size of the finger. Abnormal bleeding; excessive or less, can lead to endometrial problems and results to infertility because the embryo cannot proceed to implantation and grow.

Third is abdominal pain during menstruation. Some women will feel localized pain around vagina and anus before, after or during menstruation which could become more severe in some cases. Pain should be monitored during menstruation. Pain medication is usually given to relieve the pain. The dose can be increased gradually depending on the severity of pain. Other women could suffer too much pain that even leads them to leave their work and other may be admitted to the hospital. These symptoms may be the cause of woman’s infertility as well.
