Acelity L.P., Inc. announced today the publication of the results from a single center, prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing the ABThera™ Open Abdomen Negative Pressure Therapy System (ABThera™ OA NPT) to the Barker’s vacuum packing technique (BVPT).¹ The investigator-initiated study involved 45 patients with abdominal injury or intra-abdominal sepsis who required temporary abdominal closure following abbreviated laparotomy.

There were no significant differences with respect to the primary endpoint (the plasma concentration of pro-inflammatory markers). However, it is noteworthy that ABThera™ OA NPT was associated with a reduction in 90-day mortality when compared to the BVPT [22% for patients treated with ABThera™ OA NPT and 50% for patients treated with BVPT (p=0.04)].

“Once again, ABThera™ Therapy is proving itself valuable in the management of patients with an open abdomen,” said Ron Silverman, MD, Acelity Chief Medical Officer. “The mortality results of this randomized controlled trial are consistent with the findings of a 2013 observational study by Cheatham et al in 280 trauma and surgical patients where the 30-day all-cause mortality rate was 14% for patients treated with ABThera™ OA NPT and 30% for those treated with BVPT (p=0.01).”² For more information about the Cheatham study, click here.

The ABThera™ Open Abdomen Negative Pressure Therapy System is indicated for temporary bridging of abdominal wall openings where primary closure is not possible and repeat abdominal entries are necessary. This system is intended for use in open abdominal wounds with exposed viscera including, but not limited to, abdominal compartment syndrome. The intended care setting is a closely monitored area within the acute care hospital, such as the Intensive Care Unit. The abdominal dressing will most often be applied in the operating room.
