Promega 2012 Corporate Responsibility Achievements Continue to Benefit Environment and Community

Environmental Highlights in 2012:

Promega facilities are committed to operating sustainably by investing in improving resource efficiency, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing waste.

  • Promega reduced actual greenhouse gas emissions by 1% and 170 tons; 11.5% as indexed to revenue.
  • Energy consumption decreased by 5% and 15% as indexed to revenue.
  • For the second time more waste is being recycled than being sent to landfills and, since 2008, recycling efforts globally have increased by 37%.

Energy Use

Energy consumption is the largest contributor to the Promega carbon footprint and is of significant focus. Techniques to conserve energy include use of more efficient lighting, improved air handling equipment and use of renewable energy sources.

Conservation

Promega works to conserve natural resources and limit outgoing waste through recycling and waste minimization efforts. In 2012, over 4,000 lbs. of plastic pipette tip boxes and 750 lbs. of trays were diverted from the landfill. Promega is also committed to searching for innovative ways to reduce impacts from packaging and has used sustainably harvested materials in shipping boxes and biodegradable and recyclable air pouches to protect products with the least environmental impact.

Community Well-Being

Corporate citizenship also encompasses giving back through community outreach and support of educational and creative activities. In 2012, Promega employees volunteered over 1,250 hours in support of education at many global locations. Contributions were provided to knowledge-sharing programs like the Human Genome Exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, the Botanical Dimensions Digital Herbarium Project, as well as the community organizations established by Promega, which are the Woods Hollow Children’s Center and the BTC Institute. Charitable activities included fundraising to support local and international causes such as The United Way, The Salvation Army and Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Investing in the Future

Promega’s continued investment in research and development both expand technical capabilities and meet the evolving needs of the customer. In 2012, Promega launched 31 new products including a novel luciferase, NanoLuc®, which was named a 2012 Top 10 Innovation by The Scientist. Additional investments included construction on a state-of-the-art cGMP facility on the Madison campus and a new cGMP facility in Shanghai.

For more than 30 years, Promega has integrated the values of corporate responsibility and sustainable business practices into all aspects of our corporate culture and activity. The 2012 Corporate Responsibility Report, www.promega.com/responsibility, explains the philosophy and goals that Promega uses to align business practices with positive social, environmental and business outcomes.
