A Canadian delegation led by Roman Szumski, the Vice President of Life Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on December 11 to discuss possible collaboration.

The collaboration will first focus on the development of medical devices, but is expected to expand to other fields in the future, revealed NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung.

Hwung extended his warm welcome to the delegation saying, “This meeting is a good start for future collaboration between NRC and NCKU.”

“We have invited our faculty to talk about development of medical devices in the meeting with your delegation,” Hwung said.

Szumski said, “We are being recommended to come and meet your university because you have a very strong program in medical device.”

He also mentioned that NRC is an agency of the Government of Canada, reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Industry. Basically, NRC is governed by a council of appointees drawn from its client community.

“In NRC, we’d like to pick one narrow area and not open up to everything,” according to Szumski, “so this time we focus on bio-medical engineering and medical devices.”

Szumski said, Canada and Taiwan’s National Research Council has a relation going back 17 years. “We have collaborated in many different endeavors of science and technology developing over those years,” he said.

“At the present time, we are interested in working in Taiwan in the area of medical devices,” according to Szumski. “We are here to get to know each other so we can explore the possible opportunity in developing medical devices.”

The NRC delegation includes Roman Szumski, Vice-President of Life Sciences, Paul Wiebe, General Manager of Medical devices, and Ms. Lorena Maciel, Senior Advisor of International Relations.
