A significant milestone toward the establishment of a national trauma system in Korea will be put in place during the Korea-Arizona Trauma Summit, April 1-3, when a delegation from that country meets with government, medical and health care experts from Arizona. The summit, hosted by the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Health Services, means that the people of Korea will be closer to having access to coordinated, state-of-the-art trauma care.

The Korea-Arizona Trauma Summit will take place in Phoenix and Tucson. It will include tours, numerous presentations and demonstrations facilitated by medical and hospital leaders from Arizona’s internationally renowned EMS and Trauma System. A detailed schedule can be found at http://www.starwesttech.com/?attachment_id=153.

The Korean delegation is comprised of 34 physicians, public health and government officials, including Mr. Oh Jae Sae; Congressman National Assembly, the Minister of Health and Welfare, Jung Woo Jin; the Chairman of the Korean Society of Traumatology, Dr. Lee Jong Bouk; and the President of the National Medical Center, Dr. Youn Yeo Kyu.

One of the high points of the unique, three-day international summit is a Memo of Understanding that establishes a Korean Government Trauma Council in Arizona on April 1. The memo includes the appointments of Bob Ramsey, President and Founder of the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation; and Dr. Bentley Bobrow of the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Foundation’s medical director, as official U.S. Councilors.

“This collaboration of medical expertise will continue to increase clinical excellence in EMS and trauma systems and facilitate the exchange of the latest medical care and information technologies on a global scale,” said Dr. Bobrow.

Among the state and local political officials at the Welcome Ceremony will be Arizona Governor Jan Brewer; Congressman Ed Pastor; Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton; Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane; Director of Health Services Will Humble; Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of EMS and Trauma System and Ramsey Social Justice Foundation Medical Director Bentley Bobrow, M.D.; CEO and President of Maricopa Integrated Health System Betsey Bayless; Chief of Glendale Fire Department Mark Burdick; and Chief of Phoenix Fire Department Bob Khan.

Arizona facilities hosting portions of the summit will be the Maricopa Integrated Health Systems, University of Arizona College of Medicine, University Medical Center, Phoenix Fire Department, Starwest Tech International, Rural/Metro Ambulance Services, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Scottsdale Healthcare.

Bob Ramsey explained that the establishment of the trauma counsel has its roots in meetings here last year when the Korean government dispatched 12 trauma surgeons and public health officials to learn how Arizona’s globally renowned statewide EMS and Trauma System and out-of-hospital electronic data measurement system were implemented. “Those productive meetings resulted in forging close relationships between Arizona EMS and Trauma System leaders, the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation and the Korean Trauma Society,” said Ramsey.
