Dr. Zena Werb, professor and vice chair of the Department of Anatomy at University of California (UC), San Francisco, USA, received an honorary doctoral degree from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on November 10.

The honorary degree was conferred on Dr. Werb in recognition of her contributions to breast cancer research, extracellular microenvironment, educational achievements as well as her excellent personality.

Upon receiving the degree from NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su, Dr. Zena Werb expressed her appreciation and praised the university’s efforts at education.

“This is a great honor for me being awarded honorary doctorate of medical science of National Cheng Kung University,” said Werb, “and it is especially an honor because I have been able to have an academic interaction with the university through the students.”

“I had two students from NCKU working in my laboratory for the past two years. I’ve seen how wonderful the education system is here because they are wonderfully trained and doing very well in my lab,” she continued.

President Su conveyed her appreciation to Werb for coming a long distance to be able to make her presence at the event.

She welcomed Dr. Werb as a member of NCKU family and said, “Our university, with its 85th anniversary happening this week, has flourished into a research intensive and comprehensive institution with high reputation across different disciplines.”

“In the time ahead, we look forward to an even more rigorous and meaningful interaction between the UC San Francisco and NCKU. As we rise to a new horizon aspiring to exert even greater global impact as an engaging academy,” said President Su.

Dr. Werb said that she is really happy to be able to have international collaboration which is of course she believes UC San Francisco and NCKU will continue in the future.

Dr. Werb is recognized internationally for her fundamental discoveries about the molecular and cellular bases of extracellular matrix proteolysis and their roles in the normal functioning and pathogenesis of tissues.
