The brave volunteers aboard the Sea Shepherd ship, the Steve Irwin, have set out to battle poaching and illegal fishing in the world’s oceans. Their mission can be dangerous, unpredictable and is laden with risks including potential ramming from illegal fishing vessels, hitting hidden icebergs as well as coping with volatile Antarctic weather.

For six months prior to their departure, this group, which is comprised of volunteers from around the world, tirelessly prepped the vessel for departure. Local businesses donated food, building supplies, expertise and time.

Central to their mission is ensuring that they are able to adequately deal with potential medical emergencies on board. In order to succeed in disrupting illegal activity at sea, crew members on the Steve Irwin must first be able to safeguard their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their comrades. It is for this reason that the crew enlisted the help of Real First Aid, a startup which brings to life emergency medical situations.

In September 2015, Real First Aid delivered scenario-specific first aid training rarely seen outside of the military and medical training worlds. Using role-playing, smoke emitters and noise, as well as other props, Real First Aid created staged medical emergencies that would or could arise on the Steve Irwin ship. The course incorporated a simulated explosion on the front deck of the ship, resulting in possible injuries which could occur while out at sea. This set up a potential life threatening scenario and required the remaining crew to respond with urgency, triage the victims and evacuate the injured below deck to the medical cabin.

Not only did the crew benefit from this tailored first aid training but the Real First Aid team was also impressed by the participants’ drive. Lead instructor, Ben Krynski was overwhelmed by the professionalism and teamwork of the crew. He explained: “I rarely see a team so coherently communicate and work together to formulate and execute a plan of action”.

Ben, the founder of Real First Aid believes that what renders his company’s ethos unique on a global scale is that it brings real life immersive simulations out of the professional medical and military milieu.

Real First Aid has only been around for 18-months but is already shaking up the field with its innovative approach to first aid training. It continues to expand rapidly and has aligned with Simulation Australasia, the peak body for simulation in Australia and New Zealand. As a result of its cutting-edge, scenario-specific approach, Real First Aid is fast becoming a national leader in emergency response and management training.
