TAINAN, Taiwan

The staff members at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, took a real interest in making sure the international students were taken good care of when Tainan battles its worst dengue fever outbreak recently.

Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Yueh-Min Huang accompanied by Director of International Student Affairs Division Prof. Mei-ling Tsai and staff members from Office of International Affair (OIA) visited international students at the dormitories including Kuang-Fu 3 and Sheng-Li 6 on September 10.

“The best way to avoid dengue fever is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes that carry the disease,” said Huang when telling a Nigerian student Chinweze how to protect himself from dengue.

“At first it scares me, but with the staff from school taking precaution and measures to fight dengue I feel okay now,” said Chinweze who is studying mechanical engineering at NCKU.

He also added, “I had received emails from OIA earlier regarding the information about dengue fever, and in the dorm, the school prepared insect repellents that we can use before leaving the dorm.”

Huang showed the international students how to use repellent sticker and apply repellent spray to their clothing.

There are notices posted on every doors and the notice board as well to inform us ways to fight dengue, according to Chinweze.

Regina Kansole from Burkina Faso said that she appreciated the caring gestures when the staff members put the repellent sticker on her shirt for protection.

“I received many notifications about dengue fever mostly from OIA,” Regina said.

When asking if she knows how to protect herself, Regina said, “they say we have to use mosquito repellent and stay away from hot spots.”

Baboo, an Indian student who is studying mechanical engineering at NCKU said, “From my experience, I think the school is taking good prevention measures, and the staff members give out knowledge about dengue which is helpful.”

Seeing the head of OIA visiting the foreign students, Baboo said, “I think it is a really great thing to visit us in the dorm.”

“We have dengue in our country and we also take some of the measures in our country,” Baboo said.
