It is said that whenever the heart stops beating for longer than 4 minutes, the brain would be dead. Neurological Center at Phyathai 2 International introduced the new technique in Thailand called Therapeutic Hypothermia to either help prevent the patient from a persistent vegetative state or even death from neurologic complications.

The majority of cardiac arrest happens out of the hospital and the outcome of the patient is poor over decades due to the delay of life saving action. When the cardiac arrest happens, the usual blood circulation stops, oxygen delivery to all vital organs is also stopped. The patient will be unconscious .The organ that is the most quickly and severely affected by this is the brain. As stated above, if the cardiac arrest persists for over five minutes, permanent brain damage may occur. Therapeutic Hypothermia or the technique to deliberately reduce the core body temperature to protect the brain from severe damage after the resuscitation is thought to prevent brain injury.

Therapeutic Hypothermia Technique has long been used in US, Australia and Korea but it is considered to be new in Thailand. The technique requires the high proficiency of the doctor and the medical equipment readiness. In Thailand, there are only a few specialists who can treat the patient by this technique, one of those works for Neurological Center at Phyathai 2 International Hospital.
