What causes a stroke?

A stroke is a brain attack. It happens when the blood supply to part of your brain is cut off and is often caused by a blockage in one of the blood vessels leading to the brain or a bleed in the brain. Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to your brain to keep it functioning healthily. Without blood your brain cells can be easily damaged or destroyed. Strokes affect people in different ways, depending on the part of the brain that is affected, how widespread the damage is and how healthy the person was before the stroke.

Can you recover from a stroke?

All strokes are different. For some people the effects may be relatively minor and not last long very long. Others may be left with more serious and longer lasting effects. The quicker you receive treatment then the better your chances are of making a good recovery, so it’s important to call for an ambulance immediately and get to the hospital straight away.

Use FAST to remember the warning signs:

F – ‘FACE’ Ask the person you believe may have suffered from a stroke to smile. Does one side of their face drop?

A – ‘ARMS’ Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downwards?

S – ‘SPEECH’ Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

T – ‘TIME’ If you observe any of the above then call for an ambulance immediately

Learn the warning signs of a stroke and act FAST if you observe any of them and take them quickly to Neurology Center.
