TOKYO

Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced that UpToDate®, its leading clinical decision support resource, is helping the prominent Japanese healthcare association, JADECOM (Japan Association for Development of Community Medicine), meet the diverse needs of nearly 2,000 medical professionals delivering medical care in communities around the country.

Founded in 1986, JADECOM has been providing comprehensive healthcare to patients in Japan for nearly 30 years. “One of our key missions is to train and develop medical professionals in Japan, and all members at JADECOM are strongly encouraged to use online medical resources such as UpToDate to keep pace with fast-changing medical knowledge,” said Dr. Jun Kohyama MD, PhD CEO of Tokyo Bay Urayasu Ichikawa Medical Center and a director of JADECOM. “Our doctors especially appreciate the graded recommendations UpToDate provides, which help doctors make the best decisions.”

Supporting communities that face challenging medical situations, JADECOM serves as a resource to generalists and nurses who are essential to community medicine across the country. JADECOM has grown steadily since its beginning, and now operates hospitals and clinics in all parts of Japan, including seven teaching hospitals, 18 hospitals, five geriatric health services facilities, 21 clinics, nine complex facilities and two nursing schools.

JADECOM leaders recognized the need for a comprehensive clinical decision support solution that reached all clinicians, regardless of where they practice. The majority of physicians and the larger medical facilities tend to be located in larger cities. However, the medical facilities located in isolated mountains or island regions often face limited access to clinical information and a serious shortage of doctors.

After trying several online medical resources to support their physicians, JADECOM continued to look for a comprehensive, evidence-based clinical decision support solution that could be used not only at point of care, but for clinical education purposes. JADECOM adopted UpToDate in April 2012 and since then has provided almost 2,000 physicians and paramedics with continuously updated evidence-based clinical knowledge and recommendations.

“JADECOM is a pioneer in the effort to provide high-quality medical care for patients — not only in cities, but also in rural areas in Japan,” said Denise Basow, MD, Vice President/General Manager, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “We are honored to partner with JADECOM to achieve high quality community medicine and improve patient care through easily-accessible, evidence-based clinical information.”
