PISCATAWAY, N.J.

IEEE, the world’s largest professional organization advancing technology for humanity, today announced the IEEE Life Sciences Grand Challenges Conference will be held 2 – 3 December, 2013, at U-Town, on the campus of the National University of Singapore. The two-day event brings together distinguished thought leaders to focus on the latest challenges and strategic developments driving important practical applications in healthcare, engineering and life sciences.

“There is a shift occurring in the character of life sciences. The pharmaceutical, medical device and biotechnology sectors have led the way, while a persistent focus on discovery, delivery and continuous innovation remain drivers for growth. Now, the sub-sectors of engineering bring efficiency, effectiveness and modern processes to advance theories and research that bring the life sciences to important and practical applications,” said Nitish Thakor, IEEE Life Sciences Grand Challenges Conference chair. “Presenters at this important event will delve into the vital insights being made in both scientific and industrial progress providing a unique opportunity to accelerate innovation for the entire life sciences industry.”

The IEEE Life Sciences Grand Challenges Conference offers a rich program consisting of keynote and plenary talks, as well as panel and group discussions. Speakers and panelists will cover an array of topic areas and disciplines including bioengineering, nanotechnology, computational medicine, and the frontiers of medical technology including robotics and imaging. In addition, there will be a special event, “Neuro Night – Symposium on Frontiers of Human Brain,” with presentations ranging from reverse and forward engineering of the brain, to brain-machine-interface.

The event features a diverse lineup of acknowledged experts from around the globe, including Professor Sir George Radda, chairman, Biomedical Research Council and emeritus professor of Molecular Cardiology, University of Oxford; Alan Finkel, Ph.D., chancellor, Monash University, President, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering; Benjamin Wah, Ph.D., Provost and Wei Lun Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Paolo Dario, Ph.D., Director, The BioRobotics Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA); and Shuming Nie, Ph.D., Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Chair Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology; among many other distinguished speakers from Switzerland, Italy, Hong Kong and throughout the world.
